SHIROPICHU

Shiropichu is one of the Murdhni Taila procedures, in which medicated oil is retained over the vertex (head) using a cotton pad (pichu) for a specific duration. It is a Snehana therapy(oiling) applied externally and is mainly indicated for disorders related to head, brain, scalp, sense organs, and mind.

ETIOLOGY OF DISEASES AFFECTING THE HEAD:

  • Improper sleep
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Suppression of natural urges
  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Excessive thinking and overuse of sense organs
  • Vata-Kapha vitiation in the head region

DEFINITION
Shiropichu is the procedure in which a sterile cotton pad soaked in medicated oil is placed on the vertex and kept in position for a particular duration. This allows the oil to slowly penetrate through the scalp and nourish deeper tissues.

INDICATIONS (YOGYA)

  • Shiro Roga (head disorders)
  • Anidra (insomnia)
  • Shirahshoola (headache)
  • Apasmara (epilepsy)
  • Unmada (psychosis)
  • Kesha Patana (hair fall)
  • Palitya (premature greying of hair)
  • Akshi Roga (eye disorders)
  • Karna Roga (ear disorders)
  • Vataja and Pittaja disorders of head

CONTRAINDICATIONS (AYOGYA)

  • Kapha Prakopa Lakshanas like excessive cold, cough, heaviness
  • Recent upper respiratory infections
  • Damp or cold weather conditions
  • Sinusitis with Kapha predominance
  • Acute fever

MATERIALS REQUIRED

  • Medicated oil (e.g., Brahmi Taila, Ksheerabala Taila, Chandanadi Taila)
  • Sterile cotton pad (Pichu)-12 cm * 12cm
  • Sterile gauze or bandage to keep the Pichu in place
  • Towel and covering cloth
  • Oil heating equipment
  • Clean and calm environment

PRE-PROCEDURE (PURVAKARMA)

  • Rogi Pariksha (examination of patient)
  • Selection of appropriate oil based on Dosha dominance
  • Explain procedure and obtain consent
  • Gentle head massage (if required)
  • Oil should be warmed to lukewarm temperature
  • Ensure bladder and bowel are empty

PROCEDURE (PRADHANAKARMA)

  • Ask the patient to lie down or sit comfortably
  • Soak sterile cotton in lukewarm medicated oil
  • Place the oil-soaked Pichu on the Brahmarandhra region (crown)
  • Keep it in place with help of a bandage or headgear
  • Retain for 30 to 45 minutes, depending on condition
  • Oil may be re-added if cotton dries
  • Patient should be relaxed and avoid talking or moving
  • Remove the Pichu after stipulated time

POST-PROCEDURE (PASCHATKARMA)

  • Gently wipe the oil from scalp
  • Mild head massage if required
  • Avoid exposure to cold or wind
  • Advise light diet post-procedure
  • Rest for a short period

DURATION AND COURSE

  • Generally, once daily
  • Course duration: 7 to 14 days depending on condition
  • Time of application: preferably morning or evening

ಶಿರೋಪಿಚು ಎಂದರೆ ಏನು?

ಶಿರೋಪಿಚು ಎಂಬುದು ಆಯುರ್ವೇದದ ಒಂದು ಶಾಂತಿದಾಯಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸಾತ್ಮಕ ವಿಧಾನವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು "ಶಿರಃ" (ತಲೆ) ಮತ್ತು "ಪಿಚು" (ಹತ್ತಿಯ ತುಂಡು) ಎಂಬ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಪದಗಳಿಂದ ಬಂದಿದೆ.

  • ಶಿರೋಪಿಚು ಮಾಡುವ ವಿಧಾನ:
  • ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ದೋಷ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು (ವಾತ, ಪಿತ್ತ, ಕಫ) ಗಮನಿಸಿ, ಸೂಕ್ತವಾದ ಔಷಧೀಯ ಎಣ್ಣೆಯನ್ನು ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
  • ಎಣ್ಣೆಯನ್ನು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಬಿಸಿ ಮಾಡಿ, ಶುದ್ಧ ಹತ್ತಿಯ ತುಂಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಳೆಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
  • ನಂತರ ಹತ್ತಿಯ ತುಂಡನ್ನು ತಲೆಯ ಮೇಲಿನ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮರಂಧ್ರ (ತಲೆಯ ಮಧ್ಯ ಭಾಗ)ದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
  • ಕೆಲ ಸಮಯ (15–30 ನಿಮಿಷ) ಅದನ್ನು ತಲೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಇರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
